Finally, the hubby and I got to watch Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto last night! We’ve been trying to set up a date to watch it in the movies for weeks, but then something kept on popping up. Anyway, here are my comments:
- On the whole, I think the movie was good. Although some had criticized it as being excessively violent, this was actually in line with the people/culture being portrayed (which brings me to my second comment below).
- The movie was good, but it needs to get some facts straightened out. It was supposed to be about the decline of the Maya civilization, however it turned out portraying the Aztec instead. For one thing, the practice of human sacrifice as portrayed in the movie resembles more the Aztec practices. Another thing is that Maya culture collapsed centuries before the Spanish conquistadores came (see here).
