What is especially damaging are the characteristics we have come to universally associate with «being a man», namely: that men shouldn’t show emotions, that they shouldn’t show when they are in pain or in need of help, and that they shouldn’t cry… As one of the boys in the video clip above said, if you have never cried then you have all this emotions (feelings) trapped inside, just waiting for a violent way to get out.

Perhaps it’s high time we start redefining what we mean by «being a man», and change how we raise our sons. Let’s start by telling them it’s okay to show emotions—to cry when you are in pain—and to ask for help when you need it.
